Description

Join the Student Conservation Association's AmeriCorps members for clean up at Historic Oaklawn Cemetery. Volunteers will be working with SCA to cut back overgrown vegetation as part of an ongoing effort to restore the property. Please wear closed toed shoes, must be at least 10 years of age to participate and accompanied by an adult unless 16+ years of age.

This historic cemetery was founded in the 1800s and is of great significance in our area. Oaklawn Cemetery contains burials of notable veterans, including Purple, Bronze, and Silver Star recipients, as well as Buffallo Soldiers, and Tuskegee Airmen, and leaders from Mobile's African American Community. Due to numerous changes in ownership, the cemetery's vegetation became overgrown and community groups, such as Keep Mobile Beautiful, Veterans for Recovery, and One Simon Two Rubys and a Hamp, have stepped in to restore the property.
