Project Homeless Connect 2022 Navigators

Expired

Description

We're looking for volunteer navigators for this year's Project Homeless Connect.

Navigators are advocates for homeless clients who participate in Project Homeless Connect. At Project Homeless Connect several hundred people who are identified as "Homeless" will come to receive services such as legal assistance; employment resources; state identification cards; housing assistance; food stamp application; veteran resources; health assessments and education; mental health services; beauty and barber services; voter registration; distribution of hygiene items, clothing, coats, shoes, socks; and much more! Navigators act as "tour guides" and "advocates" through the many service areas.

This role is really important and can be very rewarding as you develop a partnership with your client. Navigators can make (or sadly, break) the event for an individual due to the treatment, care, and efficiency afforded by the relationship that is formed. It is important to treat all clients with dignity and respect.

To volunteer you must complete the following:

  1. Respond to this Need by clicking on the RESPOND button in the top right corner of the screen. All activity participants are required to sign a waiver and review a training packet, which will be available electronically when you RESPOND to this Need. After reading and/or signing each page of the waiver and training packet, please click the blue SUBMIT PAGE AND PROCEED button in the bottom left corner to indicate you've read and/or signed the page. Doing so will save your edits and allow you to proceed to the subsequent page.

  2. After you've electronically signed the waiver and confirmed completion of the training packet, click the blue RESPOND button for this Need a second time to select the shift of your choice and to complete your registration. (NOTE: In Alabama, if you are under 19, a parent must sign the waiver and release forms.)

  3. The Training Packet will give you an overview of the project and also help you understand things you might encounter during the event so that you'll feel more comfortable in your role. HIPAA training is required prior to the event due to the laws surrounding privacy and healthcare.

  4. Bring your Student ID/Driver's License with you to the event, and wear a red shirt of your choice to be distinguished from other volunteers.

  5. Agree that you will not use your cellular phone during the event. It is preferred that you leave your phone in your vehicle.

Please contact the USA Office of Community Engagement at communityengagement@southalabama.edu or 251-460-6116 if you have any questions or need assistance with the waiver and training packet.
